What are cells?
All living organisms are made of cells β the basic building blocks of life. Scientists use microscopes to see them because cells are tiny!
Inside each cell are special parts called organelles (say: or-guh-NELS). Each organelle has a job, just like organs in your body.
Plant and animal cells are both eukaryotic β they have a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Some structures are only in animal cells, and many are found in both!
How to use this guide
1. Explore the Cells tab β tap organelles on the diagrams.
2. Check Compare for plant vs. animal differences.
3. Open Study cards to review each organelle.
4. Practice with Flashcards, then take the Quiz!

Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell
πΏ Plant Cell Only
- π§±Cell wall β rigid wall of cellulose for support & protection
- βοΈChloroplasts β do photosynthesis (light β glucose); contain chlorophyll; found in leaves & green parts
- π§Large central vacuole β stores water & nutrients; creates turgor pressure for firmness & support
πΎ Animal Cell Typically
- π«§Small vacuoles β several small ones instead of one giant vacuole
- β»οΈLysosomes β recycling centers; enzymes break down waste & worn-out parts
- π§΅Centrioles β help make spindle fibers that pull chromosomes apart during cell division; usually in pairs
